The Site of Sound
2023 · 2025 · sound installation · stereo / public-address speakers · variable configurationThe Site of Sound explores belonging, memory and rupture through recordings made in Marseille in July 2023, in the aftermath of the riots following the killing of Nahel Merzouk.
Deliberately excluding the sounds of violence, the work attends instead to the everyday: a violin practised from a window, street ambience, fragments of conversation and the shifting atmosphere of the city. Recorded around Algerian Independence Day and Bastille Day, these sounds are layered with fragments and digital interruptions allowing personal and collective histories to surface, repeat and interrupt one another.
The first iteration of the installation extended this movement between place and memory through wallpaper made from enlarged found postcards. Purchased at a stall in Marseille, the postcards depict landscapes of Algeria, folding another geography into the space of the work.
Recorded to cassette in Marseille and composed in Glasgow, The Site of Sound was first presented in 2023 at Patricia Fleming Gallery, curated by 16NSt. In 2025, the work was adapted for the Panorama at Triangle-Astérides, Marseille, as part of Like a Spring, I Will Be Many, curated by Victorine Grataloup and Camille Ramanana Rahary, with support from FLUXUS Art Projects.
